The Global Day

Each community throughout the world will decide what their Global Day event will look like. The structure of your event will depend on audience, resources and local interest. Some communities in North America are working with their local Jewish book fair to develop a meaning Global Day experience while others might be creating events around PJ Library or other adult learning opportunities in their own communities. (Click here to see different Global Day models.) Each community event will be unique – some might be an all day experience while others only an hour or two.

For some, the Global Day will be a first-time learning experience; for others who learn regularly, this may be their first opportunity to learn in a large group setting. For still others, communal learning may be a regular practice and it will be the international achdut, or unifying aspect, that provides meaning. The important of the Global Day is bringing together your Jewish community from all walks of life and providing a Jewish learning experience.

Every registered community for the Global Day of Jewish Learning will receive the following resources and opportunities:

  •  Curriculum material and a facilitator’s guide for 18 individual classes (click here to see the curriculum topics). In addition to a family classes being developed by PJ Library.
  • The Global Day video – a short eight-minute film to set the stage for your event. It will provide a brief background on Rabbi Steinsaltz, articulate the meaning of this Day and the centrality of Jewish learning, and connect your community to the thousands of others that have joined in this event.
  • Rabbi Steinsaltz’s Siyyum (completion ceremony) in Jerusalem, Israel will be available for live telecast to communities worldwide. The ceremony will be approximately 20 minutes and will feature brief remarks by Rabbi Steinsaltz and other dignitaries.
  • A class given by Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz on a related topic.
  • Access to Global Day events from the 92nd Street Y will be available via satellite technology. A complete program of events will be available in Spring 2010.
